4 Reasons Why Handmade Candles Are More Expensive

4 Reasons Why Handmade Candles Are More Expensive

As a small batch candle maker, I'm acutely aware that I can't compete with retail giants, particularly on price. A phrase I've heard a few times now is "But I can get a candle for three quid in Aldi/B&M!". Not gonna lie, this is always dispiriting, as I can't even make one for that!

The truth is, you CAN get candles for a bargain, they're everywhere and some are pretty decent (although some appear decent then smell of nothing after the first burn). It is also true that candles from an independent maker are generally more expensive. This isn't because they are trying to rip you off, it's because it's a completely different product that you're buying. Get comfy, I'll explain...

The 4 Reasons (they're not what you think!)

1. Economies of Scale

Small makers don't have the buying power of huge retailers, so they don't get the advantages of economies of scale. They can't order 10,000 candle vessels at a time, they might only be able to order 10 or 50, so all their materials will be more expensive because of the smaller quantities they're buying.

2. Hand Production

Most candles you see in supermarkets and large retailers will have been produced using machines that melt, wick, pour and finish the candles, then label them. For the independent candle maker, it's a time-consuming business as everything is made by hand; weighing, mixing, wicking, pouring, finishing, labelling, packing etc.

Many candle makers also prioritise sustainable practices, using eco-friendly materials and packaging. This commitment to environmental responsibility often translates into a higher price.

At Whimsy & Wist, our motto is 'Tread Lightly' so we try to make our candles as eco friendly as they can be. This includes having a zero plastic packaging policy and cutting out unnecessary packaging such as candle boxes, in favour of organic cotton bags that bags be reused.

3. Quality of Ingredients

Commercial candles are generally made from paraffin wax because it is cheap to produce and gives the candles a smooth finish. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum which is drilled out of the ground from oil rigs and refined. Whilst some independent makers choose to use paraffin wax, most prefer to work with plant-based waxes such as soy or coconut, which are both more expensive and more difficult to work with, requiring greater skill.

Similarly, when making a candle, the fragrance is the most expensive ingredient (and the most important if it's a scented candle!). The higher the quality of the fragrance oils, the more expensive, particularly if it's an essential oil blend. We've all been seduced by a nice smelling candle in a shop, then when we've taken it home and lit it, realised that we can't really smell it. This is usually because the fragrance oil used is of low quality or the ratio of oil is very low to keep the cost of the candle down. For an independent candle maker, a candle with no 'hot throw' simply wouldn't make the cut.

At Whimsy & Wist, we use only plant waxes and high quality fragrance and essential oils that are free from toxins.

4. It's a Skill

Whenever we purchase from an independent maker, whether it's candles, jewellery, art or anything else, that person has put a lot of time into honing their craft. When I first started making candles, I (very wrongly!) assumed it would be easy, I mean, how hard could it be?! Turns out, WAY harder than I thought and definitely a hundred times more science-y than I was anticipating. Many, many, many failed candles later and I finally had something saleable. Let me tell you, when you've worked so hard on creating something that you're proud of, it's quite dispiriting when someone compares your sweat and tears to something they can buy at B&M.

This post is not to tell you 'don't buy the three quid candle'. Absolutely do that if it's your budget and it brings you joy. It's to highlight why the price difference exists, and it's not because you're being ripped off.

When you buy from a small business, you are supporting a dream. In a world where you can shop anywhere, shop small.

Beyond the Price: The Value of Handmade

While the price of handmade candles may seem higher at first glance, it's essential to consider the inherent value they offer. Here's why investing in handmade is worth it:

  • Quality and Longevity: Handmade candles burn cleaner and longer than mass-produced candles, thanks to the use of high-quality wax and the craftsmanship involved in creating the wick and the container.
  • Uniqueness and Personalisation: Handmade candles often feature unique designs, scents, and packaging, allowing you to find a piece that truly reflects your style and preferences.
  • Supporting Small Businesses: Purchasing handmade candles directly from the artisan supports small businesses and empowers creative entrepreneurs.
  • Environmental Impact: Many handmade candle makers prioritise sustainability, using eco-friendly materials and reducing their environmental footprint.
  • The Joy of Craftsmanship: There's a certain charm and appreciation for the artistry and dedication that goes into creating a handmade candle.

Conclusion: Handmade Candles - A Worthy Investment

The higher price tag of handmade candles is a reflection of the meticulous craftsmanship, premium ingredients, and unique qualities that set them apart. When you choose a handmade candle, you're not just buying a product; you're investing in quality, artistry, and sustainability.

Ultimately, the decision to purchase a handmade candle comes down to personal preference and budget. However, for those seeking a truly unique and special experience, the investment in a handmade candle is a worthwhile endeavor.
